- Cockatoos wean at about 4-6 months old
They tend to be one of the best family oriented birds and love to cuddle and socialize. They can talk but are often not real clear. They love to do anything to entertain and make you laugh, in fact they like to laugh themselves. They consider themselves part of the family and will often scream and demand time to be a part of whatever is going on. They like to be on the floor and waddle around, but watch them closely they have powerful beaks and can destroy wood and furniture quickly. They are about 18-22” long and weigh 480-700g. They live between 25-40 years depending on the species. Cage Requirements bar spacing should be no more than 1” spacing. They need more vertical space than horizontal since they spend a lot of time on the floor. 24” x 32” minimum for Goffin, Citron and rose breasted Cockatoos and 36’ wide x 32” depth for an Umbrella, Mollucan, Black Palm Cockatoo is a minimum. We do not recommend a play top for a Cockatoo as they need to remain below eye level so you can remain the dominant one. They need plenty of room to swing and dance. We always recommend the largest you can fit and afford.
